Understanding PTSD

Many individuals today are unaware that they are experiencing PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) as the symptoms can mimic other problems and illnesses. PTSD can cause anxiety, shame, and depression as it affects a person’s life and relationship with others.

A lot of people who are suffering from PTSD are seeking help, finding treatments and solutions just so they can live their lives normally. PTSD can have multiple and random triggers, which makes it even difficult to manage. This is one reason why a lot of patients get less favorable results from the treatments and therapies.

The Impact of PTSD

Stress caused by trauma has longer effects on a person that they even think it would. Research shows that this traumatic stress marks a change that lasts in an individual's brain activity. Certain parts of the brain, like the hippocampus ( responsible for long term memory) and amygdala (responsible for emotional memory) are greatly affected. As these parts of the brain, and others, get impaired, it impacts the altogether brainwave function.

Current treatment options include cognitive behavior therapy and medication. Talk therapy can take a long time to resolve the trauma as many suffer and are sometimes unaware of that trauma as it is buried within their subconscious. Medication can produce unwelcomed side effects, and it does not address the underlying trauma or restore the abnormal brainwaves.

Neuropsychological Assessments - A Help for PTSD

Being able to assess and evaluate the parts of the brain affected by PTSD is a great help to produce a better and more effective therapy for the individual. This would open to a better understanding of the issue, and create a more efficient method of handling stress or triggers of PTSD in a patient.

Neuropsychological Assessments are safer and could provide better stress management solutions. This could empower the individual to live a better life and be in much control of his well and mental being.
